WATCH 2019 Players Championship Live Stream leaderboard: Live coverage, golf scores, Tiger Woods score for Round 1

The 2019 Players Championship gets underway Thursday with all 50 of the world’s best players in action. Yes, that includes Tiger Woods, who will be on the course for his second straight Players after playing TPC Sawgrass just once in the previous four years. Woods declared himself good to go after a neck strain kept him out of last week’s event, and his presence just enhances this already-loaded field and star-studded leaderboard.

With the golfing calendar having been rejigged for the new season, The Players Championship kicks off golf’s biggest events for 2019.

The unofficial fifth major, held by Webb Simpson, begins a run of six months in which there will be at least one marquee event across both the PGA and European Tours.

It’s decision time when it comes to the 2019 Players Championship. On the eve of the biggest tournament of 2019 to date, there are myriad options when it comes to picking a winner, and most of the top 50 players in the world (all of whom are playing) are enticing choices.

Let’s cut through the noise a little bit, though, and look at the pool of nine golfers I think will include this year’s winner. There will be names — Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods among them — that are monster draws, but I don’t really think they stand a good chance of taking this year’s first big crown.

Such is life in the upper crust of golf. Here are my nine as the 2019 Players unfolds starting on Thursday.

Softer greens are in store this week in Jacksonville, Florida, in large part because the Players was moved up two months from May to March. Also affected will be the wind, and many are projecting exceedingly low scores for this year’s event.
